How To Read The Report of Particle Size Analysis?

Published: Wednesday, 17 June 2020

The below report is from a laser particle size analyzer with wet analysis. The instrument is presented by ACTTR Technology.

The upper part of the report shows the relevant preset parameters, such as the refractive index of the medium, the refractive index of the sample, as well as the user & sample information. These data are entered by the user before measurements. The hardware and software designs may not be the same between different brands. Some high-end particle size analyzer from ACTTR has a built-in refractometer, which measures the refractive index of the medium directly. Instrument will then compensate the diffraction and obtain a more accurate analysis result. The refractive index from the measurement will be shown in the report, too.

A Particle Size Distribution Curve is printed on the right of the report. You can understand the size distribution from the position of each bar from the chart. From the the inflection point, you can know the major particle size is included in the powder.

The most important values in the figure are marked on the left gray area. It recorded the three particle size distribution values, D10, D50, and D90. The values in the middle shows the average values, from different statistic method. If you want to use one single value to describe the particle size of powders, you can use one of the average values to represent it.

The laser particle size analyzers from ACTTR Technology have the most advanced laser diffraction measurement technology in the market. With full automotive operation process, one can use the preset parameters to measure & analyze the powers quickly. These parameters can be defined in advance, and can be modified according to the characteristics of different powders. For the researches that need to be repeated in the laboratory, or the quality control test of specific samples in the factory, one can also define all the processes into automatic process. ACTTR Technology has a variety of high-end, mid-range, and entry level laser particle size analyzers, which can have the balance between functionality and limited budget.
