Biodegradable Film

“Biodegradable film” is a new material, which is produced by polysaccharides and proteins. Because of its environmentally friendly and harmless to human body, it becomes a more and more popular eco-friendly material.

VIS-NIR Spectroscopy is a reliable method for analyzing the characteristics of a biological sample. It can be used to analyze the composition properties of the biodegradable film, further investigate its mechanical properties. A VIS-NIR spectrometer can even be used as a quality control equipment in the manufacturing processes of biodegradable films.

It’s similar to the plastic bags manufacturing process, the biofilms were produced by a screw extruder machine, and the raw materials of Polybutylene adipate-co-terephthalate (PBAT), whole oat flour, glycerol, magnesium stearate, and citric acid were used.

Scientists recorded the spectral data in the wavelength range of 400nm to 2498 nm, by using a VIS-NIR spectrometer. In addition, by using partial least squares regression (PLSR) method, one can analyze the relationship between the spectral data and the mechanical properties of a biofilm. The result showed, the spectral data will be affected by the major constituent components, because the components are clustered according to polybutylene adipate-co-terephthalate content. And the results proved, VIS-NIR spectroscopy is able to predict the tensile properties of biodegradable films, and one can obtain satisfactory results.

Future, VIS-NIR spectrometer has the potential to become a non-destructive inspection equipment in the biodegradable film manufacturing process.
