The Characteristic of A LIBS And Its Future

Laser is a kind of electromagnetic energy with good quality. The instrument associated with the laser, has the advantages of non-contact, high-flexibility, and high-speed. A laser beam can excite the radiation from the substance for spectral analysis. Laser is also useful for testing the physical properties of a substance. This technology became more and more popular in the recent years. In1999, the Nobel Prize winner, A. Zerwail, is the pioneer in this field. The Laser-induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS), has also become an important product in instrument manufacturers.

The existed applications of laser excitation of radiation-related technology includes: LiDAR, Light Detection And Ranging, LIF, Laser-induced Fluorescence, CARS. Since the frequency of laser is adjustable, this method has high selectivity to the dedicated element to atoms or molecules. If you wanted to detect different material properties synchronously, the laser method is the simplest one in implementation. In addition, because of the high brightness of the laser, it is possible to improve the measurement sensitivity, and further track the changes substance in a time period.

Based on the above features, we can understand, LIBS spectroscopy is a good solution for the fundamental scientific research, as well as the following advantages: 

  • The feature of noncontact of LIBS, it can be used in the measurement of inner surface inside a cavity or a container; or, in the atmosphere and detect the harmful substances in the atmosphere; the biomass combustion; the oxidation process; and monitoring the process in the production line and apply quality check. LIBS is a proper solution for all these new fields.
  • The femtosecond level wavelength of laser pulse is capable to observe the chemical reactions from time to time. It just like the evolution from photo to video. 
  • In addition, the laser had transformed the substance into plasma, so, the sample preparation is no longer necessary, in general.

Of course, the features are double-sided sword, the advantages brought the other difficulties. For example, the correct frequency control, and the correct energy control are the important factors which may influence the result. What is the proper frequency for an unknown substance? And what is the proper energy of laser to be applied onto the surface of a substance? They are all the important topics for the futhre research on the new LIBS technologies. And we expect the advantage of LIBS can be useful in the quality assurance (QA) purpose in the production line.
